Rune Toms is an experienced neonatal intensive care physician as well as a pediatric cardiac intensivist and pediatric cardiologist. Dr. Toms is the Chief of Neonatology at the beautiful HCA Florida University Hospital in Davie, Florida and the Regional Medical Director in Neonatology, South Florida for Envision Healthcare. He is also the National Director for Quality and Safety for Envision Healthcare Women and Children’s Services covering over 60 NICU’s nationally. He is currently developing a pediatric cardiology program at Envision Healthcare as national director for pediatric cardiology. He has over 20 years clinical experience from the level IV regional NICU at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) where he had the role of Medical Director for 10 years. He was also implemental in starting and developing the pediatric cardiac intensive care at UAB and the Children’s Hospital of Alabama together with a small team of cardiac intensive care colleagues. Dr. Toms is originally from Norway, he received his medical education at the Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich, his pediatric, neonatology and pediatric cardiology training at UAB and his pediatric cardiac intensive care training from Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He also received a master’s degree in healthcare quality and Safety from UAB. His clinical focus has been the area of neonatal cardiology, neonatal cardiac intensive care and high-level hemodynamic evaluation of critically ill neonates, premature neonates with congenital heart disease, pulmonary hypertension and chronic lung disease. He is a dynamic and motivating leader, mentor and teacher. Dr. Toms has two daughters and lives in Delray Beach with his wife, together as a family they love spending time in nature.
