#115 - Journal Club 45

The Incubator Podcast

Hello Friends 👋

We have an exciting episode of Journal Club scheduled for you this week. Daphna and I are eager to review the two-year outcomes of the PlaNeT2 MATISSE trial. If you recall, this trial published in NEJM (2019) showed that infants randomly assigned to receive platelet transfusions at a platelet-count threshold of 50,000 per cubic millimeter had a significantly higher rate of death or major bleeding within 28 days after randomization than those who received platelet transfusions at a platelet-count threshold of 25,000 per cubic millimeter. So we were eager to see the outcomes at 2 years CA. We also review studies looking at hindmilk in infants with suboptimal growth, a survey of NEC pain management in Europe and so much more. We hope you enjoy listening to this episode. Have a good sunday!

Two-year outcomes following a randomised platelet transfusion trial in preterm infants
Objective Assess mortality and neurodevelopmental outcomes at 2 years of corrected age in children who participated in the PlaNeT-2/MATISSE (Platelets for Neonatal Transfusion - 2/Management of Thrombocytopenia in Special Subgroup) study, which reported that a higher platelet transfusion threshold w…

Hindmilk as a Rescue Therapy in Very Preterm Infants with Suboptimal Growth Velocity
Despite advances in neonatal nutrition, very preterm infants remain at increased risk of extrauterine growth faltering. This prospective study aimed to examine the effect of hindmilk, the milk at the end of a breast expression session, on growth and plasma fatty acids (FAs) of infants born <30 we…
Thresholds for surfactant use in preterm neonates: a network meta-analysis
Objective To perform a network meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials of different surfactant treatment strategies for respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) to assess if a certain fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) is optimal for selective surfactant therapy. Design Systematic review and netwo…

Mucous fistula refeeding in neonates: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Background and objective Mucous fistula refeeding (MFR) aims to maximise bowel function when an ostomy is active after abdominal surgery, by introducing the proximal ostomy effluent into the distal mucous fistula to maintain intestinal physiology. The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness…
